Tennessee’s most famous city, Nashville, is appropriately found both in the center of the state and serves as its capital. Famed for being one of the most important music scenes in America, the downtown is a lively evening hub on weekends, while citizens work in numerous commercial undertakings such as banking, education, automotive, and healthcare industries during the weekday.
Founded in 1779, Nashville is Tennessee’s largest city with a population of an estimated 692,587 people. The community was named for Revolutionary War general Francis Nash who had died two years prior to its founding.
Nashville has been home to a bounty of diverse musical acts, most famously playing country music. Acts such as Lady Antebellum, Big & Rich, and Florida Georgia Line have been more recent regional innovators, While Diamond Rio and Dixiana have their roots there since the 1980’s. Non-country acts include Kings of Leon, Paramore, and The Dead Weather. There are places to catch live music throughout the city, but in particular along Broadway, not far from Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry on 5th Avenue N. Nashville is also host to some of the top destinations for higher learning in the country. Those schools include Vanderbilt University, Cumberland University, and the private Christian school Belmont University. Vanderbilt, founded in 1873, was ranked #15 in the Best Colleges in U.S. News and World Report 2020 Best National University Rankings. The university is home to ten schools and colleges.
The city is surrounded by wide open parkland, one of the largest being Centennial Park. Two miles west of the city and near Vanderbilt, the park is host to a replica of the Parthenon, built for the Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition in 1897. The park contains a recreation center, volleyball courts, a small pond, and a trail.
